How to Survive the Crooked Path of WLS Recovery

Most of us just want to lose the weight after surgery and be done with it. Then, we can live the life we've been longing for. Then, we will be happy. Then, we will be healthy. Then, things will go our way. Then, we'll be free. But then, we are confronted with reality.

"I finally see that this will be a life-long journey," said one retreat participant. Interestingly, several other women said the same thing in one way or another. Even the goal shared by another retreat woman, of "dealing with my regain," evolved into, "accepting the ups and downs of this journey."

The reality is that there is no final resting place until we pass away. In the meantime, all of us will continue on a somewhat unpredictable, winding path, with life intervening is surprising ways, too numerous to count.

The Indigo Girls have a song about the crooked path to finding peace in life called Closer to Fine.

They sing: "There's more than one answer to these questions pointing me in a crooked line,and the less I seek my source for some definitive the closer I am to fine."

What I'm learning is that we each need to find our own answers -- and there is no single way. The crooked path is an inevitable tool for discovery, but not the answer in and of itself. The answers are in us -- the answers are in allowing and accepting the path, and in being present for what it can teach us in each moment. Some of you know my doctor has me on an allergy- elimination diet to help me sort out some health issues. I never thought my path would turn in this direction.

For today, I am focusing on what I can learn and enjoy as I walk this path. And I'm being incredibly gentle and loving with myself. I have not been very good at self care over the years, but this crooked path has taken me there. I see that my healing depends on my willingness to take care of myself in this precious moment...
